Plumber call-out fees and hourly rates in Melbourne

Short answer

A plumber's call-out fee may pay for travel, inspection or an initial period of labour. It may not cover the repair. Before booking, ask what the first charge includes, what additional time costs and whether equipment, parts, travel and GST are extra.

How Melbourne plumbers charge: three published models

Credited inspection fee. J.O. Plumbing advertises a $55 weekday call-out for a site inspection and written quote, credited against the repair if you proceed. Its daytime weekend call-out is $185 and after-hours call-out is $275; those higher fees are not credited.

Minimum charge plus labour. Essendon Plumbing Services advertises a weekday minimum of $165 including GST for travel and the first 30 minutes on site, then $66 including GST per additional half-hour, plus materials. Its weekday minimum for blocked-drain work involving specialist equipment is $330 including GST, or $550 for after-hours blocked-drain work.

No separate call-out fee. O'Shea Plumbing advertises no call-out fee when the quoted work proceeds. Fix-It Right Plumbing advertises a $0 initial visit even if you decide not to proceed. The completed repair is still separately priced, so ask about the conditions before booking.

These are individual businesses' advertised charging arrangements, not representative Melbourne rates or quotes for the same job. Check the current total, GST, travel, equipment, parts, time spent obtaining parts, apprentice labour and after-hours charges. Provider pages checked 18 October 2026.

What the quoted fee covers

Attendance or assessment: the plumber visits and assesses the problem. Ask whether that fee is payable if you choose not to proceed.

Minimum labour: the visit includes an initial amount of time. Ask when billing begins and how additional time is charged.

Repair quote: the price covers specified work. Ask whether parts, equipment, testing and any needed compliance paperwork are included.

A blockage may need more than a first inspection; hot-water repairs may involve different parts or a replacement system. For those scopes, see Blocked-drain quotes: inspection, jetting, CCTV and repair and Hot-water diagnosis and replacement quotes.

Four questions before booking

If a fee isn't stated, ask whether it's included rather than assuming it is free. To check a practitioner's registration and possible certificates, see How to check a Victorian plumber's registration and paperwork.

If you smell gas, do not book a routine visit. Follow Energy Safe Victoria's gas-emergency guidance: keep people clear, avoid flames and electrical switches, and contact your gas distributor using the emergency number on your bill. Turn off the gas at the meter only if it is safe.

  1. What does the first fee include, and is it payable if no repair proceeds?

  2. How are additional labour, equipment, materials, travel, time spent fetching parts and apprentice labour charged, and is GST included?

  3. Is the figure for an inspection or the completed repair?

  4. If the job changes after inspection, will you ask me to approve the new work and price?
