Arranging a next-day plumbing appointment

Short answer

Need a plumber tomorrow? Tell the business your suburb, what isn't working, when the problem began and whether water is escaping or overflowing. Ask whether a suitable plumber can attend on the day you need, what the visit will cover and what it could cost if the first inspection doesn't fix the problem. An advertised service area or opening time is not a confirmed appointment.

Check for an immediate hazard first

If you smell gas, don't book a routine appointment. Keep people away, avoid flames and electrical switches, and call the gas distributor's emergency number on your gas bill. Turn off the gas at the meter or cylinder only if it's safe. Follow Energy Safe Victoria's gas-emergency guidance. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 000.

If water is actively escaping, sewage is overflowing or hot water has stopped working, tell the business immediately when you call. Ask it to assess how quickly an appropriately qualified plumber should attend; don't assume your problem can safely wait for a next-day slot.

Describe what you can see

Say which tap, drain, toilet or appliance is affected, when the symptoms began and whether anything has changed. A photo of accessible visible conditions may help a plumber understand the enquiry; you don't need to diagnose the cause or dismantle equipment.

Confirm the visit and the fee

Ask for a specific date and arrival window, whether the plumber serves your suburb, what inspection or initial labour is included, and which fees could be extra. Get a new quote before approving work that wasn't in the first assessment. For a full explanation, see Plumber call-out fees and hourly rates in Melbourne.

Ask who will attend and whether the work is within their registered or licensed class. You can check that through the BPC; see How to check a Victorian plumber's registration and paperwork.

A short booking enquiry

Replace bracketed placeholders before sending.

I need a plumber in [suburb] for [visible problem], first noticed on [date]. [Water is/isn't actively escaping.] Can you confirm whether you can attend on [day/date], your arrival window and the initial fee including GST? What further work would need a new quote?
